Ways to Make Extra Money – Creating Wealth Around Your Schedule

Creating wealth, aka becoming financially free, is the ultimate goal for most people; however, you may just be looking for other ways to make extra money if you’re stressing about your mortgage, not sure about the security of your job or the longevity of your small business in this economic climate – or even just trying to make ends meet…

Maybe you couldn’t care less about the future right now – you need to find ways to make extra money because you’re just worried about getting by TODAY

First of all, be careful with that mindsetIT WILL TRAP YOU!

Although you may feel like there’s no point or way you can think – let alone plan – for the future, realize with that way of thinking you are planning for your future to remain exactly the same, in other words, to have no future.  As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail.  “Your future does not equal your past.” Your present is simply a result of the decisions and choices you made in the past.  Change your decisions and actions today and you can change the future for tomorrow.  It’s that simple and it can happen that fast.

Creating Wealth – Where would you LIKE to be?

Do you want to continue to worry about bills with not enough money to live the way you want OR would you rather have more than enough money, able to live the life of your dreams?  The choice is up to you; if what you’ve been doing is not taking you to where you want to be, make the choice todaydecide that you will begin down the path that will take you CLOSER TO not FURTHER FROM your goals and dreams.

Other Ways to Make Extra Money Around Your Schedule

ways to make money

First you must know what you’re looking for.  But beware: not all money or types of income are equal (see my article on Creating Wealth – The Type Of Income You’re Making May Be Costing You The Most).

Are you just looking to get by? That’s what the majority of Americans are looking for because that’s all they know.  If that’s all you want, then perhaps all you need to find is a part-time or spare-time J.O.B.; in other words, you’re looking for a short-term solution to a long-term problem.  (You’ve heard the acronym for JOB right?  J.ust O.ver B.rokeAdditional earned income won’t get you closer to becoming financially independent, but it will keep you busy trading your time so you can chase after money.  There’s nothing necessarily wrong with that, that’s just what it is.

Maybe you’re at the next level.  Maybe you’re looking for more than just a few ways to make extra money. Perhaps you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired and searching for a way out, an actual solution to your problems of:

  • living paycheck-to-paycheck (or worse: living off credit cards),
  • having no time or money to spend with your kids or spouse (let alone for a vacation),
  • having no college fund set aside for the kids or even any savings,
  • no realistic plans for retirement other than to just keep going…?

Are you one of the few looking to take control, looking for more than just a few ways to make extra money, willing to to do what it takes to provide the life for your family that both you and they truly deserve?  Are you willing to get a little out of your comfort zone, to learn and develop a few new skills and a different way of doing things to be able to later live life at a level of comfort that most people will never know by creating wealth?

Here’s the bottom line –

If you’re looking for ways to make extra money, you might as well focus your energy on creating passive income (versus earned income) – income that comes in whether you work or not, as a result of your previous efforts.  Of course, you won’t be able to create a large amount of passive income overnight.  You have to first put in the work to build and develop the asset so that it can start throwing off more and more passive income over time…

Once again the choice is totally up to you:

– Would you rather work now to create passive income over time (and then be able to stop working without losing your income)?

– Or work now to create earned income and have to keep working to keep getting paid?

  • Hi Hans,
It is a very helpful post in creating extra money and you have given a very good idea of passive income and I think this idea is very good to be used. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Hans, your post is brilliant!! I have always embraced the idea of building part time income. I do not believe in putting my eggs in one basket especially when jobs do not come with a guarantee. It could be here today and gone tomorrow.

I like that you are being real with people when it comes to money issues. Your site is loaded with great and valuable information. I also agree with you that people need to do their homework and not just jump into any money making opportunity presented to them. Lynn said it better, its not just about signing on the dotted lines and lets go make some money. It takes hard work and commitment.

    • Hey Liz, appreciate the feedback. You’re right in that many people forget that signing on the dotted lines or joining something doesn’t mean anything’s going to change. You have to go to work, learn, grow and continue to do that on a consistent basis and then things will change for you. As Jim Rohn says, “if you will change, everything will change for you.”

  • I think passive income is definitely the way to go – obviously it’s not for everyone and some people NEED a day-to-day job or they’ll get restless… But I think this is something I am going to start looking into so that I can spend more time with my family. Thanks for the tips!

    • Hey Kayla, the great thing about passive income is that once you create enough to exceed your expenses, you CAN stop working, but you don’t have to. You can continue working to increase it, derive it from another source or find a hobby to do that you enjoy that may even cost you money (because you’ll have more than enough to meet all your expenses, remember). I encourage to create passive income if your goal is creating wealth and having freedom!

  • I really admire your drive! This article spoke to me… You’re absolutely right, most people have been taught to figure out short-term solutions to long-term problems. It’s really difficult to switch gears and get in the right frame of mind but with some dedication and hard work, it’s so possible. Thanks for the motivation!

  • Lynn Jones says:

Hans, Great post! You are getting real with us and telling it like it is. Many think building passive income is easy and happens over night. You know, just sign on the dotted line and they will come running to you. Not so. Like you say it takes time to learn skills and to lay a foundation for this business model and to step out of our comfort zone and go after something we really want.
    You are much appreciated!

    • Hey Lynn, yeah those infomercials and advertisers out there really have most people convinced thinking you really can get something for nothing…LOL. Creating passive income is smart, but there’s no shortcut – it takes work. But why not create passive income so you can do the work once and then move on instead of having to get back on the hamster wheel and do it all over again? Do it once, do it right, get paid over and over again. Thanks for your comments Lynn!

  • Hans….So Very true…your mindset around money is a critical stumbling block as to why many people walk around frustrated with dreams that never come. The shift in mindset will then create the shift in money coming in from earned or passive income. I like your style of laying it out there in honest terms. I can tell you know people and I appreciate how you talk about passive income not being an overnight thing. Like anything worth its salt – it will take some work!

    • Hey Vanessa, thanks for the comments. There’s no point beating around the bush – there’s no time for it anymore. People need to be told the truth, they need to understand what the reality is today and what consequences lie ahead depending on what actions they take. There is a reason people are online searching…

  • I like how personalized your article is. Just saying “I need to earn some extra cash” doesn’t really provide a good starting point. I like how your article urges the reader to evaluate their own situation and come up with a plan that will be most beneficial to you and only you. Thanks for the guidance, this article has really given me something to think about.

  • Good article, Hans.

You’re right… Ongoing residual income is the goal. A lot of people are in a company that promises that very thing, only to discover that if they fall ill or for some other reason they are not able to continue sponsoring… they are terminated, or their monthly cheques decrease dramatically. THAT is not true residual income. We need to do our due diligence to make certain we are in a company that will pay us well in the long term.

    hi hans
As you so rightly say. Creating a passive income is important to earning more and still enjoying time away from work. There are only so many hours in a day. Do you want to work all of them or create an income that comes in even when you’re not at work.

    • You hit it right on the head. It’s about creating a lifestyle, not just staying busy all day everyday to make a good income. It’s about creating the income with the time to enjoy it!

  • Hi Hans:

Great advice here! Having a plan is definitely key. This is something that I used to do year to year but now I am doing it for longer periods of time. When you have a goal in mind it definitely helps make the tough choices in the present.

    • Hey Kevin, thanks for sharing. The chinese have 50 and even 100 year plans. And many people believe they may soon become the world’s superpower. Is it any coincidence? I don’t think so. That’s the power in a good plan!

  • I so remember the days when I was caught in that mindset!

I was “trapped” for a lot of years.

I am very grateful that my neighbor came a knocking one day and invited me to an event. It started my down the path to changing the “mindset”. For that I am forever grateful.

  • Daniel L. says:

Thank you for the insight of the matter. I hope that I could be able to generate money from sidelines aside from my income. I am thinking of creating passive income too but I didn’t know how to invest. Do you have a suggestion on where to start investing?

  • Pearly Quah says:

Thanks for your great advise. I am impressed with this article and honestly, i learn new things from your post. It definitely help me to be able to use your points and advise my potential customer 🙂

Basically, I find some truths in your mentioned above. Never have I thought that I can use your question to ask my potential customer.

This is great : develop a few new skills and a different way of doing things to be able to later live life at a level of comfort that most people will never know by creating wealth.

Many thanks, Hans :-)You have given me a new idea !

  • willie@freedom to be your own boss says:

    Hello Hans,

I like how you preference the mindset to wealth achievement.

So many today, especially within the baby boomers, seem to have lost hope after losing a job they’ve had for years.

I am 53 and I am working a full time job, while trying to learn my way around the internet for creating income.

My desire is to replace my income from work and work from home using IM.

I like the idea of passive and residual income, which I first discovered in 1980 from attending an Amway meeting.

Wealth creation is possible, but you have to believe it is possible for you, if it is to be for you.

    Great post and topic.

    • Hey Willie, thanks for your comments. It’s a big shift going from the belief that you’re got a safe, secure job with a retirement and benefits and then realizing that it was all a lie. I can only imagine the anger and frustration someone in that situation might have. It wasn’t their fault; that system worked but it no longer works today. Today, financial security requires financial independence which requires financial education, knowing the differences between earned income and passive income (from a residual income business for example). Understanding how the rules have changed can mean the difference between a life of poverty or a life filled with wealth and abundance.

  • Peter Fuller MBA says:

    Excellent advice Hans!

There will come a day when our day job cash flow ends, and that is the day we retire.

So why not create some other independent cash flows while we have time.

I don’t know about you but I plan on working from the beach when I retire 🙂

    • I like your attitude Peter! Retirement can be just the beginning, no one says your income must go down when you retire?! But there’s no time like the present to begin creating passive cash flow, regardless if you have plans for retirement or not. Thanks for stopping by Peter.

  • Loren says:

    Hi Hans,

Great post! To reach our goals of financial freedom, nothing is going to change unless me decide to let go of old belief systems, take a leap of faith, trust our instincts and make the necessary changes that will get us to our goals. Then, patience, laser focus and persistence (even with a little stubbornness thrown in for that extra push) will help us achieve our dreams. No one wants to just get by and be worrying about bills and how they can provide for their family. As you so clearly state, a choice needs to be made to move out of our comfort zones, learn new skills and strategies and make a consistent effort to create a passive income and wealth.

    • Hey Loren, the fact is, we don’t know what tomorrow brings. We only have today. Therefore, we must take action today and take advantage of opportunity when it arises because it may not always be there. I think many people take their financial situation for granted, thinking their main source of income will always be there. That is a risk many people take unnecessarily. Being aware is the first step, taking action is the next. Thanks for your feedback Loren!

  • I like your question that you asked “Where would you LIKE to be?”. Definitely something that I need to start asking myself. I tell myself I want this, or I need that. But switching up the way that I think, will hopefully in turn change my results. Great article Hans.

  • Great advice Hans. I’ve seen people do amazing things when they put some effort into a part-time income such as you describe … save for a downpayment on a home, make car payments, etc. It can really change peoples lives!
